On September 6, 2008, Meg and I planned on running the 50 mile trail run at the North Face Endurance Challenge outside of Washington DC; however, the darn race was cancelled due to tropical storm Hanna. We regrouped and have signed up for several fall road marathon (Philadelphia and Scranton’ Steamtown) to compensate.
On October 12, 2008 we managed to complete the Scranton marathon in a little over 4:26. Not our best time, but considering our crazy fall schedules and the heat and industrial wastelands of the last eight miles of the race, we’ll take it. I do have to say that this race has cemented my preference for trail runs. Trails are much more fun to run and a lot easier on the body. I cannot wait until Bear Mountain next year.
On April 12, 2008 Meg and I experienced our first trail run in Bear Mountain State Park at The North Face Endurance Challenge. And what a run!
Marathons LA Marathon — my first...and second, and third, and … Long Beach Marathon — my hottest. John Archer biked along and brought me drinks and kept me moving. After the finish, I crawled under a 16 wheeler and refuse to move Delaware Marathon — my flattest NYC Marathon — the most exotic to a Californian. The first time I had seen all five of the boroughs Istanbul Marathon — starting in Asia and finishing in Europe. I was at the right place at the right time. The biggest difference from Yankee races is the stares spectators gave instead of cheers, and the only nutrition (in 1999) was sugar cubes. Philadelphia Marathon — my best time for quite a while. Perfect temperature. Scranton “Steamtown” Marathon — the greatest elevation drop.
Local running clubs, races, and other odds and ends Triple Cities Running Club — our local running club Ithaca Skunk Cabbage Classic Half-Marathon — much more fun than the name might imply Athlinks — a cool resource for aggregating your race results Runners World — tons of useful stuff and one of my favorite things to get in the mail. Garmin Forerunner 305 — our favorite training tool (and geocaching) tool Training Peaks — useful online training tool

I ran my first marathon in Los Angeles way back in the day. I was still in high school and had never felt so much pain in my life. I gave up at mile 23 and took the van of shame back to the Coliseum. This was the first significant failure in my young life, and I did not like it one bit. Over the next year I trained more, and during my long runs I focused on the sting of not finishing the race. I had been soooo close. The next year I returned and finished the race in slightly more than 4 hours. The last 385 yards was like nothing I had experienced. I was hooked. Ever since, I have tried to fit in one or two marathons a year in (when I have been in or near civilization). Compulsive running is something you either get or don’t get. There really isn’t anything in between. There isn’t much else to say. Do or do not. There is no try. |
